Sindhi Style Khichdi, called Patri (Liquid like) Khichdi is generally made during summers and enjoyed with a variety of Subzis, ranging from Turnips to Spinach, Smooth gourds to potatoes. The rice and lentils are cooked together along with some black pepper corns, till creamy and usually served with a dash of desi ghee, some homemade Dahi (yogurt)/pickle/mangoes/Papad. A light meal in summer, simple, healthy and delicious! But there is a healthy twist in the basic recipe. Interested?? Just scroll down!!!!!! Generally lentils and rice are cooked with plain water. But I used vegetable stock, just like we use in Risotto. To make a quick vegetable stock, just chop veggies like carrot, beans, cauliflower, cabbage etc (around 11/2 to 2 cups) and pressure cook with 6 cups of water till 8-10 whistles. Strain and reserve this liquid to use for cooking rice and Dal. Print Patri Khichreen|Sindhi Style Khichdi Prep time: 5 mins Cook time: 20 mins Total time: 25 mins Serves: 2-3 A light Summer meal, Khichdi made by cooking rice and lentils together using vegetable stock. Ingredients Rice 11/2 cup Khichdi ki Dal (Husked Green Gram) ½ cup ( You can vary the ratio of rice and lentils) Salt as per taste Turmeric powder ¼ tsp or less Black pepper corns 5-7 Ghee/oil 2tsp Vegetable stock or water 5 cups (more or less) Method Mix rice and lentils, rinse well with water and soak for 15-20 minutes. Drain and keep aside. In a pressure cooker, heat 2 tsp of oil. Add Peppercorns and rice and saute' for a minute or so. You can also add 1-2 whole green cardamoms. Add water/ vegetable stock, salt, turmeric powder and mix well. Close the lid of pressure cooker and wait until pressure is released 6-7 times (6-7 whistles).Turn the flame to lowest mark and let the Khichdi cook for 1-2 more minutes.Put off the flame. Once the pressure subsides, just mash Khichdi with Wooden masher till its creamy. Some prefer it without mashing, so choose the way you want to eat. The consistency of this khichdi is liquid like, so if needed add some water and boil for a minute or so. Serve immediately with a dash of Desi Ghee, along with any Subzi of your choice. Hot patri Khichreen taste equally good with some curd, papad or pickle. I served Khichreen with Karela and Potato Subzi, some curd and baked peels of Bittergourd (Karele Ji kaath, as called in Sindhi) 2.2.6

Oops it already started melting….. To begin with, it’s my Better Half’s Birthday today , So Happy Birthday Dear Hubby (Even though you dislike publicly displaying affection and all those mushy sentiments..still….). Then comes the rantings (Ahh that’s my favorite part of blogging..lol). It is a long Weekend here in India and me and kiddie were really looking forward to celebrate this day, since from past many months we hardly had got some FAMILY TIME to relax and enjoy just being together, chilling out with our kid, having fun roaming around, going on vacation…the desires are innumerable, the wishes, unending. But its hard for me to understand why the corporate world need to be so ruthless and insensitive . Instead of enjoying this day with his family, parents, friends etc, he is working (though it being a National Holiday..Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday ). Worse still…. rest of weekend and maybe next weekend too, for whatever reasons office people give. I can understand the issues they have at workplace, still I am furious . I just can’t stand all this and wish I could do something about this. But helpless as I am, I am doing what I am capable of….Rant at my blog, take out all the frustrations , breathe in and breathe out and head on towards the recipe of the day…Kesar pista Kulfi (Saffron Pistachio Ice cream) ! But something more to share before that 🙂 I longed to bake a cake, but since I am yet to decide upon Oven Vs Microwave, I hunted for a recipe to make a Cake using pressure cooker. I finally found one recipe, but it called for eggs. Nothing for Veg. option. So without having any other option(I was desperate to make one at home) I opted for Pillsbury Cooker cake mix and made the chocolate cake.It was good, came out well, tasted nice, but I really do not like to use such mixes for cooking anything.I love my food freshly made and not with anything having preservatives. But now that I am through with Baking ?(Huh?) , I guess I should wait till I got some Oven or find some good recipe for COOKER CAKES from scratch before baking another one. Ok, I know you just want me to switch over to the recipe, so without annoying you anymore here is the Kesar Pista Kulfi , pure , fresh and pleasantly sweet. The recipe is adapted from here and I hardly made any changes, except that I had less pistachios in my pantry , so used whatever I had instead of 1/4 cup as mentioned in the original recipe. Also I guess I added more than required saffron, since the colour looked pale while cooking. But after setting, it turned out to be Deep Yellow, but Who is complaining ? It tasted just perfect. The texture was smooth and creamy and the taste….Yummm. Also I didn’t had any Popsicle so I went ahead and freezed the mixture in a plastic airtight container. Thanks Ramya for a lovely recipe ! So Enjoy the spread of Chocolate cake, Kesar pista kulfi and Rasberry Jelly, while I wait here for Hubby dear to come back home.

Caution:This is a really loooong post, so visitors who are not interested in my Blah blah can directly scroll down to reach the recipe of jaljeera. Well month of June started with a good note, so here I am rewarded with two more awards, again from Medha of cook with love (hey medha people will surely blame you for being partial to me) But sincerely thanks a ton for all the awards, they surely pep up my mood and make me feel really good The two awards are Rocking Girl Award Well I am not sure how much I really rock, but this theme of passing awards is really rocking And the other one is Inspiration Award The idea behind this award is Inspiration. “This is given to bloggers whose stories and recipes inspire us. Whether it’s to eat healthier, dive back into our past to conjure up something we ate as children, or just make the light bulbs in our brains go on with a new idea for a recipe. As recipients of this award, please share with us what inspires you and then pass on the Inspiration Award to 4 other deserving bloggers.”(The logo is photo taken by Beth from Dueling Foodies) To answer that “What inspires me”? well its a blend of many people and many things that inspires me and keep me going I am inspired to live….by my kid,who loves me unconditionally I am inspired to cook ….by all those family members and friends who are willing to experiment my culinary attempts I am inspired to share all these recipes online, by my hubby, who painstakingly slogged for hours to make a setup that a non-programmer like me can manage to blog I am inspired by common people doing outstanding things, simple people achieving extraordinary goals ,people smiling inspite of their hearts bleeding in pain ..the list goes endless ! Then Medha also tagged us for meme…so here is some MEME for UU;-) Here is the Rapid fire round that I was put up to: 1) LAST MOVIE U SAW IN A THEATER? Om Shanti om 2) WHAT BOOK ARE U READING? Right now its just comic books, coz my son is picking up to read Hindi 3)FAVORITE BOARD GAME? Well chess ofcourse 4) FAVORITE MAGAZINE? Parenting and Readers Digest 5) FAVORITE SMELLS? I guess for Indians it could be just the smell of parched earth getting first drops of rain, aroma of tasty food and ofcourse the smell of Johnsons baby products applied to newborn babies 6) FAVORITE SOUNDS? Baarish ki rhimjim (piter pater raindrops), bacchon ki kilkariyan (giggling sounds of toddlers) and soft numbers 7) WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD? Being cheated and as told before, Jab tadapta hai jahan mein apna koi (when somebody close to us is in pain) 8) WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THINK OF WHEN U WAKE? Did I had a sleep?..thats the feeling which always creeps in my mind every morning 9) FAVORITE FAST FOOD PLACE? That would be a dishonest answer if I named few, coz considering foodie like me, the list is endless 10) FUTURE CHILD’S NAME? I don’t know about the future , but yes I had thought of a name “sandeep” before my son was born but ironically couldn’t give him that name (we are supposed to keep the name of kids suited to their birth charts and not those that mothers wish……….fantastic) 11) FINISH THIS STATEMENT—’IF I HAD A LOT OF MONEY I’D’ I don’t take money matters in my hand,i m just not bothered about it,so i think i will hand over it to my hubby(and let him get as many gifts he wanna buy for me …lolz) 12)DO YOU DRIVE FAST? Don’t dare to scare me by asking this….I get hysterical if my hubby drives above 35 speed 13) DO U SLEEP WITH A STUFFED ANIMAL? Cool when every one from family is enjoying it from safety of home, but scary if some one is stuck outdoors 15) WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR? I don’t have any yet and don’t like them too, iI love to take a back seat (literally) on bike and enjoy the rains in open, rather than watch raining from inside the closed doors of cars 16) FAVORITE DRINK? It has to be Icecream falooda made by my mom….the milk rabri chilled with lots of nuts, served with Rex -mixed fruit jelly, few strands of falooda (a sort of fried sweet spaghetti, cooked in sugar syrup), with a dash of rose syrup….heady combination of sinful pleasures (Watch out this space, for a proper recipe of this….coming soon) 30) OF ALL THE PEOPLE U HAVE TAGGED, WHO IS THE MOST LIKELY TO RESPOND FIRST? I wud be happy if they atleast responded….no time constraints I would like to pass on these awards and meme to Meeta of Whats for lunch honey? Sia of monsoonspice Mansi of funnfud Srivalli of cooking 4all seasons Well after all this heavy and heady stuff, lets move on to something that would help you feel light, something that will help you all (and me too) to digest that my humble blog too could receive so may awards, all courtsey to Medha. As mentioned in my favourites lists, jaljeera is my most favourite drink . Jaljeera literally means, water+cumin and I don’t know why no emphasis is given to mint leaves, coz; that actually is the base of this cooling , tangy, refreshing, drink that serves as an appetizer too and it also helps to aid digestion This is also my entry for MBP-streetfood and as per rules the link of my fellow blogger from where this recipe is inspired is Arti’s corner My version of making jaljeera differs a bit, but nothing major ! Print Two more awards and a Jaljeera to digest this news Prep time: 15 mins Total time: 15 mins Serves: 6 Healthy Mint cooler, called jaljeera that aids digestion and helps you stay cool in summers Ingredients Mint leaves half bunch (will make about 5-6 glasses of jaljeera) Salt as per taste Black peppers 2-3 Black salt(rock salt or kaala namak) a pinch for each glass Cumin powder Water Ice (optional) Salted boondi (small fried pearls of chickpea flour or besan) Method Pick mint leaves, by separating them from stalks Wash them thoroughly and grind these to paste by adding a little of water and black peppers Now take one spoon of this paste for each glass of jaljeera, mix some cold water or water and ice cubes Squeeze about half lemon for each glass of jaljeera Season it with black salt, cumin powder (roast and grind cumin seeds) and salt Taste it and adjust the seasoning as per taste Serve with crispy salted boondi floating in this cool summer drink 2.2.1
